Welcome to your daily dose of transfer speculation!

The New Year celebrations coincided with the opening of the January transfer window – that time when football news is pushed aside to make way for all manner of rumour, gossip and conjecture.

Should be fun… Ahem.

We’ll begin with news that City are set to fight to retain the services of Joleon Lescott, amid rumours of interest from Turkish side Besiktas – that one’s according to the Daily Mirror.

The England international has looked assured in the centre of defence in his 13 appearances for the Blues so far this term, but with his contract due to expire in the summer, this story could turn into a long-running saga by the end of the month.

Reports David Anderson: “Besiktas claim they want to lure Joleon Lescott from Manchester City - but the Blues do not want him to leave the Etihad this month.

"‘We are negotiating with Manchester City over defender Joleon Lescott,’ said director Ahmet Kavalci.

“However, City manager Manuel Pellegrini does not want Lescott to leave this month with his men challenging on four fronts domestically and in Europe.”

Plenty of football still to come!

Elsewhere, City are said to have one eye on the future, with Goal.com reporting that the Blues are close to sealing a deal for Nigeria Under-17 star, Chidi Nwakali.

Paul Clennam writes: “Nwakali, who was a key figure in the Nigeria squad which won the Under-17 World Cup in November, will fly to Manchester from Lagos with his parents to hold talks with City chiefs on January 2.

“If a deal is completed, Nwakali will earn £300,000 a year in wages, fees and add-ons from the day he turns 18 on December 26.

“Nwakali is also adept at playing in defence and currently represents Shuttle Sports Academy in Lagos.”

Finally, for now anyway, Abdi Ibrahim could be set to swap Manchester for France, with a whole list of clubs keen to lure the Norwegian youngster to the continent.

As you will have read from our regular Loan Watch feature, Abdi helped Stromsgodset to the Norwegian Championship, and his strong displays have put three French sides on the alert, according to Sky Sports.

The report reads: “St Etienne, Toulouse and Lorient are all weighing up moves for Ibrahim as they look to bolster their squads in the New Year.

“Ibrahim, whose playing style has been likened to Patrick Vieira and Yaya Toure, has recently returned to City after a successful spell on loan at Stromsgodset who he helped win the championship.

“The 22-year-old has been unable to break into the City side and with Ibrahim well down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium, Manuel Pellegrini is thought to be willing to let the midfielder move on this month.”

Don’t forget, this is all paper talk and nothing is confirmed until you read it right here on mcfc.co.uk!
