Adam joined City from his only other club, Middlesbrough, on February 1 2010, and was an instant hit with an acclaimed full debut against Bolton and a stunning late equaliser at Sunderland that earned him the club's Goal of the Year Award. His overall performances as a left-footed winger on the right flank brought a place in England's initial 30-man World Cup squad.

Born in Sunderland, the left winger made his senior debut at 17 on May 17 2005 in a UEFA Cup tie at Sporting Lisbon. His Premier League debut came six months later in a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at The Riverside.

His first goal followed on May 3 2006 against Bolton, and in all he played 96 matches for Middlesbrough, scoring 13 goals.

His development was helped by successful loan spells in October 2006 with Leeds and September 2007 with Watford, where he spent three months and scored five goals in 12 games before being recalled early.

Adam was capped at Under-19 level and went on to play 19 games for England Under-21s, scoring four goals, being part of the squad that contested the European Championship finals in Sweden.

His eye-catching start to life at City saw him named in England's provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup Finals. His full international debut was an impressive, if brief, cameo against Mexico although he did not make the final cut for South Africa. The Wearsider could be very proud of his progress in 2009/10 and he picked up where left off the following season, becoming an influential figure for both club and country.
